MICAS
We are proud to have contributed to one of Malta’s most significant cultural projects: the Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) in Floriana. This landmark development seamlessly merges contemporary architecture with the historic fortifications of the Knights of Malta, strengthening the island’s position as a hub for contemporary art and culture.

In close collaboration with GP Borg Projects and Italian architecture firm Ipostudio Architetti, we worked to overcome the unique challenges presented by such a distinctive site. Our role focused on delivering over 1,800 sqm of raised flooring, designed to accommodate both aesthetic demands and complex technical requirements.

Durability without compromising design
The solution combined engineered wood tiles from Floorlab Italy – a robust gress base topped with elegant parquet finish – ensuring durability without compromising on design. To create a cohesive flow, the same parquet finish was extended to staircases and common areas. Two separate mock-ups were developed to test structural systems, allowing stakeholders to select the most effective solutions for accommodating large-scale ducting, mechanical services, and IT infrastructure.
While raised flooring is typically set at 15cm, this project required bespoke adjustments ranging from 35cm to 70cm. A CTTR structure was implemented across the lower levels for maximum service integration, while a CTS system was used where requirements were lighter. A particularly distinctive feature was the creation of a 15cm perimeter gap to house LED lighting that enhances the bastion walls – marrying heritage with modern functionality.

Attention to detail guided every stage, from precision tile cutting to custom aluminum profiles for skirting and lighting. Logistical planning was equally critical: each 15kg tile was manually delivered and installed to protect materials and ensure accuracy within the site’s constraints.
The raised flooring supported major installations such as Joana Vasconcelos’ six-ton art tree, standing as a testament to Vivendo’s commitment to combining craftsmanship, innovation, and partnership in every project we undertake.
