In changing times, such as those of the past three years, the demands we make of our homes and furniture can adapt and vary. No one understood this better than French ‘constructeur’, architect and designer Jean Prouvé. Born in 1901, Prouvé lived through two world wars and responded to the challenges of his era by developing a new ‘constructional philosophy’. Based on the principle of rational fabrication, he designed hard-wearing furniture free of artifice and buildings that could be dismantled, modified and transported.
Rediscover Jean Prouvé’s story as one of the most significant architects of the 20th century, his approach to designs, structures and materials, and his sensitivity to colour.

ABOUT
— PROUVÉ

In the realms of design, architecture, and engineering, the French visionary Jean Prouvé (1901-1984) stands as one of the most versatile and innovative minds of the 20th century. Prouvé consistently identified himself as a ‘constructeur.’ His endeavours encompassed not only design but also entrepreneurship and manufacturing, all guided by a singular mission: to pioneer inventive, contemporary solutions to the challenges of construction and everyday living. His His unique ‘oeuvre’, was to seamlessly integrate utility, material authenticity, and economy (minimizing material resources and employing the simplest construction methods) with the intricate demands of mass production. In the process, he almost always achieved aesthetically convincing results, which explains his significance today in design. Given this assessment, it is hardly surprising that numerous architects and designers list Prouvé as one of the figures who have influenced them– among them Renzo Piano, Jean Nouvel, and Norman Foster.
