4 ways to Declutter your Desk and Boost Productivity

by Philippa Cassar

Workspaces

We prioritise the person who will spend most of their waking hours within spaces we provide.

A messy desk leads to a messy and anxious brain, and therefore it is in everyone’s best interests to keep their desk clean and tidy throughout the work week.

Here are a few tips to help keep your desk clear with a minimum of effort.

1. Organise, organise, organise.

Disorganised desks cripple your productivity and might make it difficult to focus and increase your stress levels. Keep a dedicated spot on your desk for pens, stationery, post-it notes, folders, and documents. At the end of each day, spend a few minutes putting everything back where it belongs, keeping at least 80% of your desk clear. That’ll help you start the next day in a better space.

2. Personalise for inspiration

Personalising your space can actually inspire you to work better. Your identity and how you see yourself is a crucial part of who you are, and it’s important to have that sense of belonging to an organisation that you work in, helping you to feel included in the company.

3. Clean and dust everything

Besides serving as good practice for the rest of your life, dust and dirt could trigger latent allergies. Therefore, make sure that you dust your desk off at the end of each day. If possible, set some time aside at the end of each week for a deeper clean.

4. Stay hydrated

Coffee’s a great way to start the day but if you want to keep focused, drink water. Keep a bottle of water near you and take regular sips of water. You can even use it as an opportunity to take a 2 minute break every so often so you can refill your bottle and make sure you can stay hydrated throughout your day and prevent headaches in the long run.
